What Are Fake Followers?

A
Written by Anna Komok

Fake followers are accounts that follow an influencer's profile without representing a real, active person, including bots, inactive accounts, and accounts bought specifically to inflate a follower count. They count toward the follower total shown on a profile but don't engage with content or represent genuine audience interest.

How Fake Followers Are Created

Some fake followers are bots created specifically for sale, they are automated accounts with no real activity behind them. Others are real accounts that were once active but have since gone dormant, or accounts created by follow-for-follow schemes and engagement pods that inflate numbers without reflecting genuine interest in the account's content.

How to Detect Fake Followers

The clearest signal is a mismatch between follower count and engagement: an account with a large following but a low like-to-follower ratio often has a significant share of suspicious accounts among its followers. Other signals include sudden spikes in follower growth, a high proportion of followers with no profile photo or posts, and audience demographics that don't match the influencer's stated niche or location.

Why Fake Followers Hurt Campaigns

A brand paying for a sponsored post is effectively paying for reach to real people who might buy the product. If a meaningful share of an influencer's followers are fake, the brand is paying for a follower count that doesn't reflect the actual audience size, which lowers real campaign performance below what the numbers on the profile suggest.
