What is Mass Following

Learn what Mass Following is, why HypeAuditor considers it an inauthentic growth tactic, and how it affects an influencer's classification in the Audience Type section.

Written by Iren

Mass Following is when an Instagram user follows more than 1,500 random Instagram users with the expectation that some of them will follow back.

At HypeAuditor, Mass Following is considered an inauthentic way to gain new followers. As a result, the influencer becomes classified as a Mass Follower in the Audience Type section. In most cases, accounts that practice Mass Following take advantage of automatic follow/unfollow services to grow their follower count in an inauthentic and largely ineffective manner.

Mass Followers do not see posts from all the users they follow. The Instagram algorithm shows posts only from those accounts with whom the influencer has interacted recently.
